Zweigelt, the wine for connoisseurs

Zweigelt, also known as blue Zweigelt or Rotburger, was crossed in 1922 from the St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch grape varieties. It is the most widely cultivated red wine variety in Austria and has been very popular with wine drinkers worldwide since its introduction.
You can discover Zweigelt vines on walks through the vineyards in all of Austria’s wine-growing regions, but they are most prevalent in the eastern wine-growing regions. In Seewinkel, it is also the grape variety of the DAC. Neusiedlersee DAC wines are always pure Zweigelt.
They delight with their charming character, fruity notes and soft tannins. Zweigelt is the right wine for beginners, inexperienced or connoisseurs and “wine lovers”.

Typical Zweigelt characteristics and aromas:
– soft tannins
– Fruit accentuated
– Vistula aroma
– Vanilla notes (if aged in wooden barrels)
– Violet-reddish color
– Full-bodied
– black berry color

Zweigelt from the Seewinkel
For us, as for most winegrowers in Seewinkel, Zweigelt best reflects the identity of our region. The influence of Lake Neusiedl, the countless hours of sunshine and the traditional ageing in barrique barrels allow us to emphasize the typical varietal characteristics of Zweigelt.

Main grape variety at the Salzl Seewinkelhof winery

As the main grape variety at the Salzl winery, it leads our range of single-varietal wines. Whether classic, reserve, Neusiedlersee DAC or as a premium wine in the form of our “Sacris” – our winery lives and loves Zweigelt. Zweigelt is also an important component of our cuveés and is simply indispensable to our business.
Zweigelt has enchanted wine drinkers worldwide for decades with its incredible drinking flow and what is often described as its charming character, and has become the most important component of red wine production in Austria.
Take a look at our other articles on “Salt pans in Seewinkel” or “Holidays on Lake Neusiedl” if you are interested in our region or would like to get to know it better, or come and visit us in Illmitz and see for yourself.

Salzl – pleasure that goes on.
